Workshop software questions, answered
What is workshop software?
Workshop software is the system that plans and records the work in the bays: who is booked in, which bay and technician the job sits on, what was done, which parts went on, and what gets billed. It is the operational half of a garage management system, and it is where most of a workshop's lost time and unbilled labour hides.
Is MechanicX UK-specific?
Yes. Prices are in pounds, VAT is handled the UK way, vehicle lookups work from a UK registration, MOT history and expiry come from the official DVSA service, and support is UK-based.
Can I plan capacity for the day?
Yes. You set your working hours, lunch and other breaks per day, and how many technician hours you actually have. Each job carries estimated hours, and the diary shows a loading bar per day — green under 75%, amber to 100%, red when you have over-committed. Multi-day jobs spread their hours evenly.
Will my technicians use it?
The job cards view is designed for a phone or tablet in the bay: photos, parts, labour lines, notes and sign-off. Nothing else is on the screen, so there is no training course to run.
Can I limit what staff can see?
Yes. Roles decide who sees pricing, customer contact details, reports and settings. Technicians can be limited to the work in front of them.
Do I have to move everything over on day one?
No. Most workshops start with the diary and job cards, add invoicing the following week, and import their old customer list when they are ready. Nothing is time-boxed to a rollout project.
